Dorel`s profit jumps 42%
MONTREAL, CANADA (CP) --
Dorel Industries Inc.'s fourth-quarter profit jumped 42
per cent on sharply higher sales, beating analysts' expectations
and sending shares of the furniture maker higher. The company
also reaffirmed upbeat earnings and sales targets for fiscal 2004.
The company earned $20.7-million (U.S.) or 64 cents a share
in the three months ended in Dec. 30, compared with $14.6-million
or 46 cents a year ago. The average expectation of analysts polled
by Thomson First Call was 62 cents a share.
Fourth-quarter sales jumped 34.3 per cent to $324-million from $241-million.
Montreal-based Dorel's class B stock rose 52 cents or 1.2 per cent
to $44.49 on the Toronto Stock Exchange at midday Wednesday,
past its previous 52-week high of $44.25.
Last month, Dorel announced it is buying Madison, Wis.-
based Pacific Cycle LLC — best known for name brand
bikes such as Schwinn, Mongoose and GT — from private
equity investment firm Wind Point Partners for $310-million in cash.
In 2003, Dorel also scooped up Carina Furniture Industries Ltd.
and French juvenile products maker Ampa Group.
“Two thousand and three was one of the most active and
rewarding years that we have ever experienced, integrating
two significant acquisitions and preparing for a third,” said
Martin Schwartz, Dorel's president and CEO. “These key,
strategic purchases provided for increased sales, but over
and above sales increases, margin improvements and our
strict cost reduction culture helped net income grow by 22
per cent during 2003.”
Dorel's full-year profit for 2003 rose to $75-million or $2.32
a share from $61.6-million or $2 a share. Sales climbed 17.3
per cent to $1.2-billion from $992.1-million in 2002.
The company also reaffirmed Wednesday that it expects to
earn between $3.25 to $3.35 a share in fiscal 2004, a forecast
that includes results from the acquisition of Pacific Cycle.
Sales are expected to climb to between $1.6-billion and
$1.8-billion from $1.2-billion, the company said. “Two
thousand and four will be a year of integration where all
energies will be focused on identifying and implementing efficiencies.”

Nautilus chairman steps down
Vancouver, Washington --
The Nautilus Group Inc., a Vancouver, Wash.-based maker
of exercise equipment, said founder Brian Cook is leaving
his chairman's post, effective March 1.
Gregg Hammann, who replaced Cook as president and chief
executive officer in July 2003, will now replace him as chairman,
Nautilus said.
In a statement, Cook said "it seems appropriate"
that he retire now with a "strong management team in place."
Cook in 1986 founded Bowflex, the predecessor to Nautilus,
and still one of the company's stronger brands. In recent years
he engineered the acquisitions of Nautilus, the fitness division of
Schwinn/GT Corp. and StairMaster. But competition and the economic
downturn hit hard, and sales fell throughout the past two years.

MADISON, WI --
Pacific Cycle, owner of Schwinn, Mongoose and GT,
overhauled its marketing team and marketing strategy.
The beefed up marketing group is now located in the
company's Madison headquarters.
"Having a more diverse staff means that we can accomplish
more of our creative endeavors in-house, which cuts down
on costs and increases the efficiency with which we can operate,"
said Paul Silver, Pacific's vice president of marketing.
"We're equally committed to supporting our independent
bike dealerships as we are our mass and sporting goods retailers."
Pacific's marketing team is as follows.
Paul Silver, Pacific's vice president of marketing,
was previously the company's general counsel.

services, previously worked in advertising outside the industry.
Most recently she was director of brand strategy at a New
York City firm, working with clients like American Express,
Planned Parenthood, Harter Furniture and Milliken.
Travis Chipres, director of sports marketing, was a
three-time world champion BMX athlete racing for
Mongoose before he came on with Pacific. He also
served as Mongoose's marketing promotions manager
and previously worked with Specialized BMX.
Chris Holmes, senior marketing manager for the IBD channel,
has been involved with the Schwinn brand for years. Before
Pacific bought Schwinn, Holmes worked for five years in sales

worked in sporting goods sales and most recently for Schenkein,
a public relations agency in Denver, Colorado.

for the company and its brands. Prior to Pacific, Kelly
worked as global marketing manager at Serigraph,
a plastics printing company.
Chris Woodage is the official photographer for the Schwinn,
GT and Mongoose brands. He is responsible for all action
sports photography, art direction and coordination.
George Stiehl is Pacific's online marketing manager.

he functioned in many different capacities, including
operations, sales and marketing.

On January 13, 2004 Dorel Industries bought Pacific for $310 million.
Dorel Industries of Montreal is the new owner of Pacific Cycle.
Chris Hornung, Pacific Cycle's chief executive officer, will remain
head of Pacific Cycle and will run the company as a standalone
division of Dorel. The two companies hope to finalize the sale
by the end of the month.
"As you know Wind Point Partners, the majority shareholder
in Pacific has been trying to sell the entire company for over a
year now which has happened," said Byron Smith, Pacific Cycle's
president and chief operating officer. "Dorel will keep the
management team together in Madison and key managers,
including Chris, retain an equity stake in the new company.
We all have a vested intrest in the new company."
Dorel is a publicly traded company employing approximately
4,800 people in fourteen countries. It specializes in consumer
products including home furnishings. It's juvenile product division
sells infant car seats, strollers, high chairs and toddler beds under
the Cosco and Safety 1st brand names. Pacific Cycle, which sold
approximately 5 million bikes in 2003, is the company's first bicycle venture.
Canada's anti-dumping tariffs, up to 64 percent on Chinese
produced bicycles like Pacific Cycle imports, do not make
it viable to move Pacific from the United States where import
duties are substantially less.

Nautilus Direct Recalls of Bowflex Power Pro Fitness Machines
WASHINGTON, D.C. - ( CPSC )
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC),
Nautilus Direct (doing business as Bowflex), of Vancouver,Wash.,
is voluntarily recalling about 420,000 Bowflex fitness machines to
address two safety issues. First, while being used in the incline position,
the machine's backboard bench can unexpectedly collapse and break,
posing a risk of injury to the user. Second, the "Lat Tower,"
can rotate forward and fall during use, posing a risk of injury to the user.
Nautilus Direct and CPSC have received at least 70 reports of
the backboard benches breaking, resulting in at least 59 back,
neck and shoulder injuries. Nautilus Direct has received at least
18 reports of the "Lat Tower" rotating forward and falling, resulting
in at least 14 back, neck, shoulder, teeth, nose and head injuries,
some of which required stitches.
The recalled fitness machines are the Bowflex Power Pro XL,
XTL and XTLU systems with the "Lat Tower" attachment.
The "Lat Tower" attaches to the back of the bench, and has
pull-down pulleys attached. The name "Bowflex" and the model
name are printed on the front of the machine. The machine has
10 to 14 resistance rods that extend about 48-inches high and a
backboard bench that is about 36-inches long. The recalled
fitness machines were made in China, Taiwan and the U.S.A.
Infomercials and specialized retail stores nationwide sold the
fitness machines from January 1995 through December 2003
for between $1,200 and $1,600.

Dorel to close Ontario factory, cut 300 jobs
MONTREAL, CANADA --
Dorel Industries Inc. (nasdaq: DIIBF - news - people)
said on Wednesday it will close a furniture factory and lay off 300
workers in Brampton, Ontario, just four months after acquiring the
plant in the takeover of Carina Furniture Industries Ltd.
Dorel said the closure will have no impact on its earnings because
the costs will be added to the acquisition costs of Carina, whose
takeover made Dorel North America's second-largest maker of
ready-to-assemble furniture.
Montreal-based Dorel said most of the production will be
shifted to its more efficient factory in Cornwall, Ontario,
where the laid-off workers will be offered to relocate.
"Carina was purchased primarily for its sales, customer base
and avenues of distribution," Bob Klassen, the head of Dorel's
ready-to-assemble division, said in a release.
Carina makes the Carina and SystemBuild brands of furniture,
which it markets through retailers such as
Staples (nasdaq), Home Depot (nyse), Wal-Mart (nyse)
Dorel has not disclosed financial details of the all-stock takeover of Carina.
Shares of Dorel gained 21 Canadian cents to close at C$40
on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Wednesday and were up
5 cents at $30.80 on Nasdaq.
The stock, which has gained 35 percent over the past 12 months,
received boost last week when Dorel surged to the front of the
U.S. bicycle industry with a $310 million deal to buy Pacific Cycle,
makers of the well-known Schwinn brand.

Pacific Sues Maverick, Klein, Alleging Patent Infringement
MADISON, WI --
Pacific Cycle filed a patent infringement lawsuit against
Maverick American and Klein Bicycle based on its iDrive
suspension technology.
Pacific, which owns the Schwinn, Mongoose and GT brands,
seeks to stop the two companies from using Maverick's rear
suspension design, which Pacific claims uses iDrive technology.
The Maverick suspension design in question is used on its
ML7 frame and is licensed by Klein for use on its Palomino mountain bikes.
Pacific filed suit in the Colorado District Court.
"We take our proprietary technology very seriously,"
said Chris Hornung, Pacific's founder and chief operating officer.
"It's a big part of what makes our bicycles among the best in the
industry, and our independent bike dealers expect this level of
innovation from us. It's unfortunate that we have to take legal action,
but we will protect our technology by any means necessary to
continue supplying independent bike dealers with the highest level
of bike design."
Paul Turner, Maverick's founder and the founder of RockShox,
has long contended that his design is different and that Pacific's
allegations are without merit. He has sought a solution to this
problem since before Pacific acquired GT.
Officials at Trek, which owns Klein, also said the lawsuit is groundless.
"Trek has looked very closely at the allegations Pacific raises
against it and Maverick. We believe them to be without merit.
The Klein Palomino does not infringe the Pacific patent," said
Bob Burns, Trek's general counsel.
Dorel Industries of Montreal began the process of buying
Pacific earlier this month. Hornung will remain as Pacific Cycle's
chief executive officer and will run the company as a standalone
division of Dorel.

Dorel buys bicycle firm for $310-million (U.S.)
Montreal, Canada (AP) --
Montreal-based Dorel Industries Ltd. says it is buying leading
bicycle firm Pacific Cycle for $310-million (U.S.), as the
consumer products company eyes the recreational business for growth.
Pacific Cycle has a 27 per cent market share of U.S. bicycle sales and
manufactures such brands as Schwinn, Mongoose, BMX and GT bicycle brands.
“We intend to leverage Pacific's powerful brands to create a
platform for future growth in leisure and recreational products,
including natural extensions in our juvenile segment,”
Dorel CEO Martin Schwartz said in a statement Tuesday.
Wisconsin-based Pacific Cycle has annual sales of $325-million,
Dorel said. The acquisition is expected to add “at least” 50 cents
a share to Dorel's fiscal 2004 earnings and 25 cents a share related
to the company's average tax rate.
With a work force of 4,800, Dorel makes products ranging from infant car
seats and strollers to furniture. Its 2002 revenue was $992-million.
Dorel says the U.S. bicycle industry has annual sales of $5.5-billion,
with new bicycles accounting for $2.5-billion. Pacific Cycle sells
about 5 million bicycles a year and Dorel says it sees “potential
to gain additional” market share.
“Pacific Cycle sells more bicycles than anyone else in the U.S. bicycle
industry and its portfolio of powerful brands is one of the strongest
in the sporting goods industry,” Mr. Schwartz said.
“Its business model is very similar to ours and provides numerous opportunities
to significantly strengthen Dorel's position as a global consumer products company.”
The Montreal firm says Pacific Cycle's operations resemble
Dorel's distribution channels and outsourcing, particularly in Asia.
“Both companies have developed high quality products through domestic design,
overseas sourcing and intensive marketing through long-established retailer relationships.
Dorel is financing the acquisition, from private investment group led by
Wind Point Partners, through debt. Dorel has amended its credit facilities.
"This acquisition, along with Dorel's existing businesses,
will generate sufficient cash flow to pay down debt,” he said.
Pacific Cycle's other products include Roadmaster, InStep, Pacific,
and Murray labels. Pacific Cycle will be run as a Dorel division and
its management will remain in place, the company said.

January 13, 2004
Dorel to Acquire Pacific Cycle
MONTREAL, Canada /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -
- Powerful brands will give Dorel leading position in U.S. bicycle industry -
Acquisition expected to add a minimum of US$0.75 per share in fiscal 2004
Dorel Industries Ltd. (TSX: DII.A - News, DII.B - News; NASDAQ: DIIBF - News)
today announced it is adding a significant new leg to the Company's business by
entering the bicycle industry through a major acquisition. The Company has signed
a purchase agreement to acquire Wisconsin- based Pacific Cycle, a designer and
supplier of bicycles and other recreational products, best known for its Schwinn,
Mongoose and GT bicycle brands. "Pacific Cycle sells more bicycles than anyone
else in the U.S. bicycle industry and its portfolio of powerful brands is one of
the strongest in the sporting goods industry. Its business model is very similar
to ours and provides numerous opportunities to significantly strengthen Dorel's
position as a global consumer products company," stated Dorel President and CEO,
Martin Schwartz.
The total value of the all-cash transaction is US$310 million and is being financed
through additional debt facilities. The purchase is expected to close within three
weeks upon receipt of regulatory approvals. Pacific Cycle is being purchased from
an investment group led by Wind Point Partners, a private U.S. equity investment firm.
Mr. Schwartz said Dorel has amended its current credit facilities to accommodate both
this acquisition and the Company's future cash flow needs. "Debt is the most efficient
and cost effective source of financing. This acquisition, along with Dorel's existing
businesses, will generate sufficient cash flow to pay down debt."
Pacific Cycle's annual sales are in excess of US$325 million.
The transaction will be immediately accretive and is expected
to add at least US$0.50 per share to Dorel's earnings in fiscal
2004, as well as at least an additional US$0.25 per share due
to the impact of the acquisition on the Company's average tax rate.
Powerful brands, strong customer relationships
Founded in 1977, Pacific Cycle is a leader in the design,
marketing and distribution of high quality, branded bicycles
and other recreational products. In addition to the Schwinn,
Mongoose and GT lines, Pacific Cycle also markets products
under the Roadmaster, InStep, Pacific, and Murray labels.
Pacific Cycle combines these well-known brands with long-established,
efficient Asian sourcing. It distributes its brands through its strong
relationships with high volume retailers, particularly in the mass
channel as well as sporting goods chains and specialty independent
dealers. This broad distribution has enabled Pacific Cycle to garner
an industry-leading 27% share of total U.S. bicycle sales including
44% of the bicycle sales in the mass merchant sector.
Pacific's brand portfolio enables it to serve virtually all consumer demographics,
price categories and bicycling styles. With an 88% market awareness,
Schwinn is an American icon dating back to 1895 and has a reputation
for delivering high quality bicycles. It is one of the most widely recognized
brands in the sporting goods industry. Mongoose has a 73% market awareness and
is particularly well known in the aggressive, performance- oriented
BMX bicycle and freestyle riding market. The strength of Pacific's
brand portfolio also allows it to license its power brands domestically
and internationally, thereby delivering profitable revenue while expanding
the presence of the brands into additional product categories and markets.
"This transaction is consistent with our objectives and is aligned with Dorel's
strategy of growing our consumer goods to leverage the strong distribution channels
that we have developed. Pacific Cycle does in bicycles what Dorel has been doing for
years in juvenile and home furnishings products. Both companies have developed high
quality products through domestic design, overseas sourcing and intensive marketing
through long-established retailer relationships. We intend to leverage Pacific's
powerful brands to create a platform for future growth in leisure and recreational
products, including natural extensions in our juvenile segment. Combined with
Dorel's resources, we are confident that Pacific's management will take the
company to a new level."
Mr. Schwartz underlined Pacific's longstanding sourcing relationships,
citing its 25 years of experience in developing and sourcing quality products,
predominantly from third party manufacturers in Asia. "Pacific has consistently
been at the forefront of the overseas production model that now dominates the U.S.
bicycling industry. This closely parallels Dorel's manufacturing model and I foresee
great opportunities in working together."
Pacific management to remain
Pacific Cycle was founded by Chris Hornung in 1977.
He began his career in the bicycle industry while completing a degree in Economics.
In 1980 he began importing bicycles directly from suppliers in the Far East and
developed relationships with key U.S. retailers. He directed Pacific's purchase
of Brunswick Bicycles in 2000, as well as the bicycle assets of the Schwinn/GT
Corporation in 2001. Pacific will be run as a stand-alone Dorel division.
As part of the transaction, Dorel has established financial arrangements with
key Pacific Cycle executives that will ensure management continuity and provide
a powerful incentive to continue Pacific Cycle's strong performance.
The U.S. bicycle industry accounts for roughly US$5.5 billion in annual sales.
New bicycles represent some US$2.5 billion, while parts, accessories and service
total close to US$3.0 billion. Bicycle sales have averaged between 16 to 18 million
units annually. "Pacific sells about 5 million bicycles each year and, as the largest
player, has the potential to gain additional share through the added strength of Dorel.
"This is a very special day for Dorel. We have purchased a consumer products company
with a great deal going for it, including some of the best known brands, powerful
designs, established distribution channels,a highly motivated management team and
strong cash flow. Most importantly, Pacific Cycle is an operation that is immediately
accretive to earnings," concluded Mr. Schwartz.

This isn't your father's Schwinn
Milwaukee, WI (AP) --
~~Waterford Precision Cycles shifts gears with custom bikes~~
From the remnants of a legendary family business,
Richard Schwinn created his own bicycle company.
It doesn't have much in common with the Schwinn Bicycle Co.
that once was a household name for Sting-Rays, Varsities and
Orange Krate bikes.
Richard Schwinn's company, Waterford Precision Cycles, is tiny
compared with the former family-controlled Schwinn Co. that
peaked at more than $200 million in annual sales in the late 1980s
but filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1992.
Waterford Precision Cycles is housed in an old Schwinn Co.
machine shop in the village of Waterford, 35 miles southwest of Milwaukee.
A pudgy Labrador retriever named Gunnar greets guests at the
door, followed by Richard Schwinn dressed in faded blue jeans and a work shirt.
The unpretentious business owner has a wry sense of humor about an industry
in which his family's name was a powerful force for nearly a century.
"Life in the bicycle business is tenuous at best," he says.
"Why did the old Schwinn company die? Well, that's like
complaining because your Aunt Lucy lived to be only 106
rather than 108 years old. The number of businesses that
last as long as Schwinn did, under one ownership, are few
and far between. Just like at Yellowstone, not many of the
bison live to get very old."
Schwinn goes Pacific
The Schwinn bicycle brand is now owned by Pacific Cycle,
a Madison-area company that is one of the nation's largest
bicycle distributors and also has Roadmaster, Murray, Dyno
and other brands in its stable.
Richard Schwinn, and business partner Marc Muller, started
Waterford Precision Cycles in 1993 when they bought the
Schwinn Co.'s last remaining U.S. factory from the company
during its bankruptcy.
Schwinn was vice president of production for Schwinn Co.
Muller worked for Schwinn as a designer of the company's
hand-crafted Paramount racing bikes.
The Waterford shop, then known as the Paramount Design Group,
wasn't very big. But it had the tooling and specialized jigs needed
to build elite bicycle frames.
"This factory was too useful to get lost in the shuffle,"
Richard Schwinn recalled. "It had some reasonable profit potential."
Waterford bikes are hand-built using some old techniques
and new, high-tech steel alloys. The prices for a complete
bicycle range from about $2,500 to $8,500.
Waterford frames are made from steel rather than aluminum
or other materials, partly because the alloys used are light weight,
strong, and lend themselves to custom shaping.
"This is not the steel that was on your old bicycle," Schwinn said.
"It is five to six times stronger . . . and a completed bike frame
can weigh under three pounds."
Sizing up the customer
Each Waterford frame is custom-built for its owner
based on the person's measurements and type of riding.
The fitting process goes even further, Schwinn said.
"We tell people to bring their biking shorts and shoes
here to the factory. They sit on a sizing machine, which
is like a stationary bike, and spend about 45 minutes to
an hour" getting measured for their new bike.
Waterford offers almost a limitless choice of colors.
Some people have their names painted on their bikes,
and some choose custom paint schemes like a black
and white Holstein special.
The company has a less expensive line of bikes named after
Gunnar, the company mascot. Gunnar bikes have outsold
Waterfords, in volume, and are opening some new markets
for Schwinn and Muller.
Schwinn said Gunnar was launched in 1998, partly as a backup
to Waterford. So far, most Waterford bikes have been aimed
at road riding. Gunnar, on the other hand, offers a wider selection
of off-road and road bikes, including racing models.
"We didn't want to downgrade the Waterfords, but we wanted
something to make our product line more adaptable should there
be a recession," Schwinn said. "Gunnar is still a high-end bike.
It's just not as custom as a Waterford, and the prices start at
about $1,500 instead of $2,500."
Waterford grew rapidly through 2000 and then slowed some
with the recession. It now has about 18 employees, up from
eight when the company started.
The work that Waterford does is too customized for most manufacturers,
said Fred Clements, executive director of the National Bicycle Dealers
Association, based in Costa Mesa, Calif.
"Waterford is dealing with what's almost a sub-niche" of the
bicycle industry, Clements said. "It doesn't need 1,500 storefronts
and hundreds of thousands of units to be profitable, and it's not as
much of a slave to fashion trends" as other bike companies.
Waterford builds all of its bicycle frames in Wisconsin,
while most bicycle companies have frames built in Asia.
"If you surveyed the bicycle business seven years ago,
about two-thirds of the bikes sold in the United States
were built in this country," Schwinn said. "At this point,
it's probably less than 10%."
For consumers that are used to spending several hundred dollars
for a new bicycle, the prospect of spending several thousand
dollars could be daunting.
"But when you compare the cost of buying a Waterford to
even a used Harley-Davidson, we are a cheap date," Schwinn said.
Waterford has a small presence overseas, including dealers in
Germany and New Zealand. The company could do more business
outside of the U.S. if it weren't for the dollar's strength, Schwinn said.
The company's total sales are about $1.5 million a year and have
grown roughly 10% annually. This year, the company will make about 3,500 bikes.
As the great-grandson of Ignaz Schwinn, who founded Schwinn Co.
in 1896, Richard said it was hard to watch the family business crumble.
In 2001, Pacific Cycle paid $86 million for the assets of
Schwinn/GT Corp. out of Schwinn's bankruptcy. The last
vestiges of the Schwinn family bicycle collection were sold
at auction in 1997, with a 1968 Schwinn Sting-Ray selling for $16,000.
"The company was a legend, but it also was an old-line manufacturing
company with a lot of old-line problems," Richard Schwinn said.
"That last year was a train wreck," when foreign competition peaked
and bicycle sales fell in the recession.
Schwinn isn't getting rich with Waterford Precision Cycles,
but he likes having a product that others can't easily copy.
"We can do some things here that we probably couldn't do
under corporate ownership," he said. "In some respects,
being free from the old Schwinn company has helped."
*Waterford Precision Cycles
Co-founded in 1993 by Richard Schwinn, great-grandson of
Ignaz Schwinn, the founder of Schwinn Bicycle Co.
Richard has a master's degree in business administration from
University of Denver and was vice president of production for
Schwinn Co. before it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1992.
At Waterford, Richard's business partner is Marc Muller,
who designed Schwinn racing bikes. Location: Village of Waterford,
about 35 miles southwest of Milwaukee. The company is in a former
Schwinn Co. factory and employs about 18 people.
Five-year plan: About 10% to 15% annual sales growth in an
industry that is cyclical in nature and prone to wide swings in
consumers' interests.
Quote: "It's like my grandfather said: If you don't like problems,
don't get into business because business is nothing but problems."
Quotable:
This factory was too useful to get lost in the shuffle.

Andre Ellison gets crowd on their feet
http://gtbmx-live.gtbikes.com/news/news-story.html?nid=167
Tulsa-Oklahoma -
Andre Ellison one of the youngest dual sport riders
(Top Racer and Dirt Jumper) goes off in Jump expo
Andre Ellison rode his GT Fueler into the Tulsa stadium friday night
just to do a few tricks for the crowd, but what he ended up doing
was purely awesome.
Andre probably should have been resting as he would race
the Grand National championships the next day, but what
he did will have them remembering Andre and his GT bike for ever!
It was a Dirt Jump expo that went off in between "Race Of Champions"
motos at the 2003 ABA Grand Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Andre who would race tommorrow to win the amateur class
is also is a top dirt jumper.
He certainly proved that when he pulled off a backflip tailwhip
in front of the thousands of fans. Andre later went on to try some
more technical tricks and had the stadium going wild...they were
loving his tricks more than the racing that was going, when asked
Andre about his unbelievable trick he responded with "That's how
we do it at GT, we go big" (

BMX Plus! TJ Lavin Automatic Team Review - Dec 2003
http://www.schwinnbike.com/news/product.php
Madison, WI, --
"By far one of the best bikes we have seen from Schwinn, well, ever."
2004 Schwinn Automatic Team – BMX Plus!, Dec 2003
If you have been giving thought to buying a Schwinn, but have been
having doubts after seeing some of their more basic bikes at your local
Wal-Mart, this may renew your faith in the company that is as old as the
sport. After making the move to the Schwinn team, we knew it wouldn’t be
long before TJ Lavin had a thing or two to say and put together a dialed
signature ride. So forget the kickstands and chainguards you saw on bikes
crammed between half-rate mountain bikes; this is TJ’s signature ride.
What you get
Would TJ ride anything less than full chromoly? Maybe on a dare, but never
on his signature frame. Along with the Special Ops forks and two-piece
Schwinn bars, the frame is full chromoly bow to stern. Frame highlights
include lower detangler stops, open ended top and down tube gussets,
and dual cable routing back to the seat stay brake posts. A pierced top
tube and lower wishbone ensure strength in the back end and reasonably
sized dropouts keep both weight and grind drag at bay.
It’s good to see Schwinn’s part line, XS, back in action as well. XS stepped
up to provide a front mounting aluminum stem, full rip-stop jumping saddle
with oversized rails, and sealed bearing, 48-spoke wheelset, rolling on
14mm axles and Sun Black Box rims. Some new tire designs from Duro
found their way onto the Automatic and look good, with the more
street-influenced tread of the Basket Case in the rear and dirt tread of the
Jumper in the front. Braking is provided by Tektro and is detangled by SST.
Pinned platform pedals and a pair of tubular three-piece cranks are sure to
provide plenty of traction and strength, while pushing the machined
aluminum sprocket of the 39/14 gearing. Although you’re not as likely to
find a pair on TJ’s bike very often, a pair of pegs were thrown in for good
measure.
What we liked
The appearance and performance of the Automatic was everything we
could ever want from a company, barring a few shortcomings. The bike
was clean, light and rode like a champ. Provided we weren’t doing nothing
supermen like TJ, but it rode great for our applications. The open-ended
gussets were a definite plus. The bars allow plenty of room for a trim, but
were plenty narrow for our tastes right out of the box. The braking on the
Automatic was smooth and effective straight out of the box as well, easily
further boosted with a little time and a few bucks on new brake pads. The
wheels were on the lighter side for 48’s and held up great. Another big
highlight on our list were the Duro tires. They held high pressure without a
whimper and provided ideal traction on any surface; definitely something
to look for, if even on their own. The tubular three-piece and pinned
platforms held up great, even under some hard landings, making them a
worthy investment to add to the mix. Although TJ is a dirt jumper, two
pegs were thrown in to prove the bike’s versatility, This is where the
39/14 gearing provided its worth to our drive-side grinder, keeping the
drivetrain well clear of any assortment of same-side grinds.
What we didn’t like
After two “once-overs” with the tool box we finally got the Automatic
settled to where it was no longer rattling loose in the headset and wheels
when we rode. Be sure to put in this kind of adjustment if an Automatic
finds its way under your feet and you will be happy when you arrive at a
settled product. Our last problem was the seat. Everyone loved the way it
looked, and the full rip-stop surface couldn’t be beat. The problem arose
when our test rider fired out a superman seat grab and was left holding
the seat, while the rest of the bike floated away. Although similar to most
other brands and designs, the seat broke free from all it’s mounts, ripping
clean off the rails and making for a hazardous landing. We can’t say the
seat didn’t take a hammering prior to it’s untimely removal, but this wasn’t
very inspiring to learn superman seat grabs. Be careful out there; it’s a
wild, wild world.
Survey says
By far one of the best bikes we have seen from Schwinn, well, ever. Light
enough to be someone’s personal lightweight project, strong enough, with
full chromoly construction to handle most everything you can dish out, and
aside from a few small parts that crumbled out of the equation early on,
it’s ready to ride. We wish we had more of a story behind the breaking
seat, but as best we can tell, prior damage just reared its ugly little head
at an inopportune time. By the looks of the test photos, you can see just
how hard we rode the Automatic and possibly why we had this problem.
That aside, the Automatic is ready to roll with nothing more than a set of
chain tensioners, if you even feel you really need them. Designed for the
mid to full-size rider, we would suggest you look into the TJ Lavin designed
Automatic, regardless of where you may find one for sale, and give it
everything you’ve got.

Pacific Cycle Brings It All Home
MADISON, WI -- Pacific Cycle is closing its office in Vernon Hills, Illinois,
as well as the offices of its InStep division in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Some of the employees from those offices have been offered jobs at
Pacific's headquarters in Madison.
The majority of InStep's six employees will move to Madison,
said Jeff Frehner, Pacific's vice president of human resources.
About 30 employees work in the Vernon Hills offices,
mostly in the company's marketing, credit and product
development divisions. Frehner did not say how many
of those employees would move to Madison.
Byron Smith, Pacific's president, said the
company is improving its operational efficiency.
"Consolidation of functions in fewer locations provides
important synergies and improved communications," Smith said.

Wind Point Still Seeking Investors For Pacific
FRIEDRICHSCHAFEN, Germany --
Chris Hornung, Pacific Cycle's chief executive officer,
announced at a Eurobike press conference that Wind Point
has not been successful in finding a buyer for its 43-percent share of Pacific.
A new investor might not be secured until after Interbike.
Wind Point helped finance Pacific's acquisitions and growth,
but is ready to move into other areas, Hornung said.
"We have performed better, financially,
than almost any other bicycle supplier in the industry," he said.
Nonetheless, Wind Point holds investment positions
in companies like Pacific for up to eight years.
"We started as part of a fund of 20 different companies
and they have held us for over four years," said Hornung.
Hornung owns 36 percent of Pacific; the rest is owned by individuals.

Louisville, KY - Andre crushes the competition at the NBL Grands
Hyundai/GT Superstar, Andre Ellison once again crushed the
competition, this time at the NBL Grands. The biggest race of
the season for the NBL had the best riders see Andre take
control of the 16 and Over open class. Some say its the 2nd
toughest class next to the Pro's, and Andre took home the big win.
Andre also was in the 18-20 year old expert main event,
but trying to get the best possible start, he spun his rear wheel
and wound up flipping over the bars. For Andre, it was a bit
of disappointment, but just gave him more fuel for the win in the
Open class. Andre is the top amateur in BMX racing right now,
and is looking to take home the #1 plate in the ABA Nag series.

X-Games Downhill Race
http://gtbmx-live.gtbikes.com/news/news-story.html?nid=145
Woodward West, CA - ~2003 X-Games BMX Downhill~ Hyundai/GT BMX Race Report
For the past 3 years, BMX Downhill has been one of the biggest
sports in the ESPN X-Games. With a huge course at Woodward East,
riders have learned how to deal with huge 30 to 40 foot gaps and speeds
up to 40 miles an hour on a BMX bike. But for 2003, and the X-Games
being brought to Los Angeles, ESPN, and the X-Games crew knew
things had to be just a bit bigger. With the new track location at
Woodward West, in Stallion Springs, CA -just 80 miles outside
LA- the BMX Downhill course had all the riders excited and
wondering if the ESPN crew had outdone themselves this year.
The track was the biggest BMX track ever built. On a steep
Mountain side, the Downhill BMX course was scary to look at,
as the drop off from the face of each jump just seemed to never
end. But the riders took to the course with excitement, and by the
end of the first day of practice, Hyundai/GT's Christophe Leveque,
had the track under control and ready for the time trial on Saturday afternoon.
On the time trial, Christophe had the track down enough to qualify
for the X-games finials. But on Sunday, as Christophe was warming
up for the event on the track, he had a crash that was a very close call.
Christophe was OK, but felt that it was not worth the risk of injury to
compete in the event. Sadly, he pulled out of the event and watched.

Hyundai/GT BMX Team Back on top at the World Championships!
http://gtbmx-live.gtbikes.com/news/news-story.html?nid=143
Reno, NV -
~Christophe Leveque wins ABA World Championship Time Trial~
Hyundai/GT BMX Race Report - Christophe Leveque wins ABA World Championship Time Trial
Andre Ellison wins the 18 Boys ABA World Championships
The ABA held its 2003 BMX World Championship race this
past weekend in Reno, Nevada. With BMX riders from all
over the world, and over 10,000 fans on hand, the ABA
World Championship was to be one of the best BMX races
of the 2003 season. Team Hyundai/GT was in full effect, with
its team trailer on hand, with its entire line of 2003 BMX race
bikes on display, as well as one of the team's 2003 Hyundai
Tiburon GT cars on display. The fans at the ABA race were
able to enter to win a Hyundai Santa Fe that will be given
away at years end, along with a GT Mountain bike that was
given away on Sunday, just before the World Championship
main events. Fans also walked away with GT T-shirts, Hats,
Stickers, and great memories of the Hyundai/GT race team.
The event kicked off on Friday, with the Worlds pre race,
the All Star National, and Team Hyundai/GT, fresh off the
plane for Australia, was on the gas.
Not to let any rain ruin the riders parade, as the skies opened
and poured down, the ABA postponed the World Championship
event till Sunday and it was a great decision. As the ABA crew
did an excellent job getting the track ready for the World
Championships, the Hyundai/GT team stuck around to sign
autographs for an hour, till the last fans left. As Sunday morning
approached, the track, the fans, and the Hyundai/GT riders were
ready for some great racing.
Christophe Leveque continues his super fast racing, with 2 podiums
at the ABA All Star National, with a 2nd in Pro Open and a 3rd in
AA Pro. Christophe has been getting faster and faster at each race
this season, and it wont be long before he is back on the top spot
on the podium. As the World race kicked off, the AA Pros had an
individual time trial. Each AA would have a shot at the track alone,
with the top rider grabbing the "Fastest Pro in BMX Award",
as well as gate pick for the rest of the World Championship race.
Enter Christophe Leveque. One of the sports most technical riders,
rose to that challenge, and beat the fastest time of the day by almost
a full second! Crowned "fastest rider in BMX" Leveque took home
the huge check to go along with the title, and showed his fans that
he is back! Christophe is looking to have the fastest time this
upcoming weekend at the ESPN X-games for BMX Downhill.
In 2002, Christophe was the fastest qualifier at the First BMX Downhill,
and hopes to make this year his first X-games win!
Andre Ellison has become the most dominant BMX racer in the
amateur ranks in the past few months. After winning each race he
has entered in his age group for the past 4 nationals, Andre
continued his winning ways aboard his GT Ultra Box again this
weekend, winning both the All Star National and the ABA World
Championships in the 18 year old Age group. Andre attacked the
Worlds track with his smooth, flowing style of riding, throwing in
some insane style over the Pro section, erupting the crowds.
Andre also graces the pages of Transworld BMX this month,
with an insane bar hop full page picture. Andre is the future of BMX.

GT - Leveque Places 5th at UCI Worlds
http://gtbmx-live.gtbikes.com/news/news-story.html?nid=142
Perth, Australia - Leveque back on form. -
Christophe Leveque is a plain amazing. After a year long recovery
from 3 major back surgeries, he has come back to the top level of
BMX in just a few short months, and the Worlds showcased his skill and determination.
Having won the World Title 9 times in the past, Leveque knows what
it take to get the pressure of the one day event out of your head and
just ride strong in each moto and qualifier, just taking each race one
at a time. Leveque's true determination showed in his 1/4 final the most,
as a first turn crash with 2 other riders almost ended his quest for world
title #10. Leveque proved just how head strong he was, as well as
physically strong, as he jumped up, and battled it out, passing a rider,
to transfer on to the semi final. Leveque also transferred out of the
semi with style and was ready for the big race win.
All riders and spectators on hand thought making the main alone
was a major accomplishment. As the gate dropped for the World
Title main event, Christophe took a huge chance at getting the
ultimate gate start, but just barley tapped the gate, throwing off
his start just the slightest bit, but in AA pro that is the difference
from winning. Leveque rode a strong lap, and placed 5th for the
day, but more importantly, he showed the BMX world he is back
on track and is ready to be the dominant rider that he has been in the past.
Christophe's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Hyundai Motors USA,
Fox Racing, Marazochi Forks, Tangent, Smith Eyewear, Tioga,
BMXpros.com, ODI, Profile, Thomson, Easton, Champion Nutrition, and Powerbar.

Hyundai/GT BMX Team Down Under GT Team looks to add world title
http://gtbmx-live.gtbikes.com/news/news-story.html?nid=141
Perth, Australia -
With the UCI World Championships just a few days away,
the Hyundai GT team has been busy down here is Australia.
On Monday, July 21st, the team did a USA GT/Mongoose pro
day/clinic at a local BMX track yesterday, and it went very well.
Over 200 kids came to see Christophe, Andre, John Purse, and
the Aussie GT team ride, get their autographs, and get a free GT
or Mongoose Hyundai T-shirt. The track was loaded with GT bikes,
and it is by far the most popular bike brand down here right now
and growing rapidly, from what I have heard from the locals.
The track itself was great, with a fast flowing euro style,
that the riders loved.
Wednesday night is the King Of Dirt, which Andre Ellison is
already qualified for, and it will be a big show. Aboard his GT
Karkas, he will be going for the $5000 1st place money in a stacked field.
Friday is the Cruiser worlds race, with Christophe Leveque looking
to take the new 2004 GT 24" bike to his 10th world title. Then on
Sunday, we will have the junior elite race for Andre, who is a favorite
and then the Sr Elite race, on the technical Worlds race track and
should have some good results from the guys.
Everything here in Australia has been going smooth, great and fun,
so we will do our best to get GT BMX another world title!

Nautilus hires Levi Strauss exec to pump up its profits and sales
Vancouver, Wash --
The Nautilus Group, the maker of the Stairmaster and other
health and fitness equipment, hired Gregg Hammann yesterday
as chief executive officer and president.
Hammann replaces Brian Cook, effective immediately.
Cook will continue as chairman of the Vancouver, Wash. -based company.
"It's very positive news," Cook said. "We've built a very strong
foundation, and now we have to maximize our brands and move
forward. Gregg's expertise and background will help us execute
our strategy quicker."
Cook said he was not forced out. He and the board initiated
the search for his replacement several months ago, he said.
Before joining Nautilus, Hammann, 40, was chief customer
officer of North America and president of Latin America for
Levi Strauss, where he led an initiative to expand the company's
brand and distribution. He had worked in sales, marketing and
general management with Coca-Cola, McLeod USA and Procter and Gamble.
Cook, 53, was CEO of Nautilus for 17 years and held a variety
of managerial and financial positions at Sea Galley Stores, a
now-closed restaurant company, before joining the fitness-equipment maker.
Analysts said the management change was welcome.
"It's the right time for a new leader to take over," said R.J. Jones,
a senior equity analyst with Delafield Hambrecht in Seattle. "They've
missed the last three quarters and it's been one series of disappointments
after another. They experienced substantial growth over time, but the
reliance on one product line has come full circle for them."
Nautilus has slashed its profit forecasts for three straight quarters
and earlier this month said its second-quarter and annual profits
will fall short of analysts' expectations. The company, whose
brands include Bowflex, Schwinn, Nautilus and Stairmaster,
will report second-quarter earnings July 30.
Flagging sales and profit have forced Nautilus, whose growth
has centered on its Bowflex machine, to introduce new products
and sell them in retail stores instead of through direct sales.
Hammann said he will look at how best to leverage the
company's brands and will execute the company's strategy more aggressively.
"Every company hits a bump in the road, and so has Nautilus,"
Hammann said. "But I think the outlook will be positive."

condition it could be.
Rockford is a superfast track, that is wide open, with huge asphalt berms,
a silky smooth surface, and just the optimum blend of speed and skill
to give the riders a great challenge to be the fastest rider in each race.
With the Hyundai/GT team trailer and Tiburon GT Car on Display,
the thousands of fans had a lot to be happy about. They were also
treated with a chance not only to win a GT T-shirt, hat, or water

The Hyundai / GT Team riders Christophe Leveque and
Andre Ellison took to the Rockford track and let there skills
and training pay off as both had a great race weekend.
Christophe has been on the track for just a few races since his
return from his back injury, and already he is looking like he
never missed a step with making the AA Pro mains both days
in Rockford. On Saturday, Christophe wowed the fans with
a great race performance, placing 4th for the day. On Sunday,
Leveque was back again, looking as fast as ever, but some
tight racing in AA would limit Christophe to a 5th for the day.
Andre Ellison took to the Rockford track like a local,
as he made moves to gain the lead in 17 expert both days
to take home the wins. Andre had huge leads by the last turn,
and was turning a lot of heads. With wins both days,
Andre looks forward to going to the Southpark NBL National
this upcoming weekend and getting ready for the 2003
World Championships in Australia in a few weeks.

Team Hyundai/GT Atop the Podium at the ABA Spring Nationals
http://gtbmx-live.gtbikes.com/news/news-story.html?nid=131
GT Press Release -Lancaster, CA ABA Spring Nationals
Hyundai/GT Bicycles Factory Race Team Report
The ABA held its 12th round of the 2003 National series
over the Memorial Day weekend in Southern California.
Lancaster, Ca is about 1 hr north of Los Angeles, but when
you arrived to the Analope Valley Fairgrounds, you would
never know it, as the shaded grass arena was a pleasant
surprise for all who attended. Inside the arena, was one of
the best built BMX tracks of the year, with a technical track
with a difficult Pro section, that would make or break many
races over the weekend.
The Hyundai GT Team was in a prime location for the
20,000 some fans to come on by and see the many
Hyundai automobiles and the full line of GT BMX Race
Bikes on display, as well as enter the raffle to win a
GT I-Drive Mountain bike on the weekend, or a chance
to win a Hyundai Santa Fe at years end. All the fans that
came by would leave with a hat, water bottle, or T-shirt,
making the Hyundai GT Pit area, the most popular place
at the entire race. Team Riders Christophe Leveque,
Jamie Staff, and Andre Ellison were all on hand to take
to the track and try to once again sit atop the podium.
Christophe Leveque had an impressive weekend, as he was
once again out front in the moto;s on Saturday, and made it
to the tough AA Pro Semi, where, he just missed out making
one of the toughest Pro mains of the year. Christophe was in
the Pro Open main event though, and as incredibly, he
holeshotted the main event and lead up to the first turn,
until he was bumped and had to settle for a 5th overall.
Not too bad for a guy who is just at his 2nd race back
after a year layoff in the AA Pro class. Just wait until
summertime, and Leveque is in full swing.
Jamie Staff made the long trip to Lancaster. He had been in
Australia for the past few weeks training and competing on
the UCI world Cup Schedule. Jamie had won the opening
round of the UCI track series a few months back, and has
been getting ready to defend his 2002 UCI World Championship
title in a few months. Jamie took a break from training to make
it here for the Spring Nationals, making the Pro Open main event
both days. Jamie will be back in full BMX race mode after the
UCI Track Worlds.
Andre Ellison had his best weekend of his Hyundai/GT team
career, with a huge win in the 17 expert class on Sunday at
the Spring Nationals. On Saturday, Andre fought a tough
battle in the 17-18 year old Open class, just missing out on
the win, with a 2nd, and had a crash in the 17 expert main
event. Andre looks to gain a spot in the Pro Jumping finials
at the X-games later this month, at the X-Games Qualifier
at Woodward west, in CA. Andre has been doing double
duty for Team Hyundai/GT in the racing and jumping division,
and looks to explode on the jumping scene here real quick,
as contest season opens up.
The Hyundai/GT Bicycles Pro team proudly drives the 2003
Hyundai Tiburon, GT edition. The team is also proudly
sponsored by OGIO, and Tioga.

driving experience. With available performance features like a

Bestwick's Best Trick Wins BSV
By Daniel Dodd EXPN.com
Saturday, May 17 Bike Stunt Vert Finals
Jamie Bestwick, competing in an X Games event for the first
time since the summer of 2000 due to injuries, went beyond
the call of duty for Team Europe in the Bike vert competition,
the final event of the Global Championship, on Sunday night.
He pulled an eye-popping, double-take inducing, he-did-what?
-kind-of-trick -- a downside tailwhip flair -- to win the event.
While it was a huge, emotional comeback victory for Bestwick,
it wasn't enough for Team Europe to overtake Team USA in the
overall Global standings. Team USA claimed the X Games
Global championship by a score of 196 to 167 over Team Europe.
Bestwick was just happy he rode at all, win or lose.
Bestwick performs a competition first with this tailwhip flair.
The move brought down the competition and nearly brought
down the Alamodome.
"I am stoked that I actually rode an X Games for once instead
of sitting down there with a boot on my foot or sling on my arm going,
'Yeah, yeah. Well done lads.' " Bestwick had been working on the
trick for months, and was itching to unleash it on an unsuspecting public.
"That's a millennium trick," said Bestwick with a smile.
"Tailwhip flairs don't come around too often.
I'm just so pleased my feet caught the pedals and I walked away.
It went better than I expected. Happy days."
For awhile, it looked as if the outcome of the Bike Stunt Vert
comp would determine the overall Global Championship race,
that the team battle would boil down to a two-way showdown
between Team USA's Dave Mirra and Kevin Robinson and
Team Europe's Bestwick.
Dave Mirra busts the tailwhip en route to a third place finish.
After the first round was complete, the riders stopped to watch
the final run of the Men's Ski Superpipe on the Jumbotron,
live from Whistler. But when Team Europe's Candide Thovex
slammed the lip of the pipe on his final run and dropped to tenth,
the U.S. was assured of the team championship. The second and
final runs of the Bike vert competition were all about personal pride.
Even more to the point, it was about Dave Mirra trying to move up
from fourth place and knock Bestwick out of first.
Mirra had a good run, landing a 540 tailwhip and a double tailwhip,
but he lost control of his bike on a regular barspin with only a few
seconds remaining in his run and had to settle for third.
This no handed flair helped propel Kevin Robinson to
second place at the X Games Global Championships.
Kevin Robinson claimed second place with a strong first run
that included a no-handed corkscrew flair, a picture-perfect 540,
and a tailwhip over the elbow. Robinson was one of many riders
who were psyched to see Bestwick back in action.
"Everyone has been so stoked that I am here, after missing two X Games,
and that really means a lot to me," said Bestwick.
"This year, when I broke my arm, I was really down on riding
and it could have gone either way. But everybody always has
so much support for me and likes the way I ride. It just means a lot."
Bestwick's impressive performance had everyone asking him
what he would do in August at the '03 X Games. But tricks
weren't the first thing that came to his mind.
"I have to get there first."
